What is measurement and Evaluation of Thinking Skills (HOTS)??(4 March 2008)

Our lecturer always want us focus on HOTS compared to LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) and maybe they are correct because HOTS can stimulate students’ thinking more.In the lecture by Dr. Kamisah for ‘Measurement and Evaluation of Thinking Skills (HOTS)’,I had learned a lot about the correct method for assessment. The exam questions that come out should be in the mixture of HOTS and LOTS as well. And I learned to set the question especially in multiple choice, we should Make all choices plausible to uninformed students so that students can get confuse and try to choose the best one.By the way, I also learned that the answers  need to be arranged in a logical order if it exists. In my memory,I think my primary teacher had set the questions with the answers not in a logical order. Answers with 1,2,3,4 is better compared to 1,4,3,2.I found that during my previous exam, I had done the questions with the answer “none of the above”, “all of the above” and “I don’t know”. Even sometime there are 4 or 5 alternatives and one of it is “none of the above”, then if I cannot get the answer, I will choose “none of the above” as my answer. So, now I understand that this kind of questions considered poor question..haha~so try to avoid this kind of questions especially for us which will be the future teachers…I found that sometime I not really love multiple choice questions but in certain condition I like it. If is History subject, then I want the exam come out with all objectives because is easy score compared to essay. But subjects such as  Biology, I prefer essay because I always score low marks in Biology. When I entered university, then I changed my mind, I like multiple choice questions more than essay. I didn’t touch Biology and I focus on Chemistry and Maths. As a future teacher, the planning of assessment is very important and is more effective  if follow Bloom Taxonomy..erm…I hope I can do it one day~~~~
